Chugging Along

Posted in blogging, writing with tags , on April 8, 2013 by Nellie

I really didn’t write much this weekend. The goal I set for myself for Camp NaNo was 30,000 words. It’s doable without being TOO much, really. I’ve done 15k and 25k. 30K shouldn’t be that much of a problem. So far, I’ve only written about five thousand words so I need to write about 1500 a day to get ahead and stay ahead. I’ll have to see how it works.

Yesterday I was kind of busy. I’ve taken to volunteering my time and helping transport rescued cats to their forever homes. Yesterday I drove two very fluffy cuties to meet the last leg of their journey. They are so adorable. It was also my birthday. I’m at this point that while I like to get some things: a gift card for B&N, maybe a really nice bottle of wine, a road trip somewhere, it’s not a big deal really anymore. So I spend my time helping gives cats a second chance when they were close to not having that chance. It’s good for a little extra karma and I’m an animal person. It feels good to make someone else’s day and help them out where it wouldn’t have possible before.

The name of the group on Facebook is Underground Railroad Rescue Kitties Network or URRKN. If you’re interested in joining, just pop over. Though if you don’t do Facebook, I can see about what can be done to join up. And it’s only a few hours a month, if that, of your time. It’s really not that bad.

Struggling along

Posted in blogging, writing with tags on March 20, 2013 by Nellie

This whole juggling schedule I need to work on is trying. I know other people do it but I’m still trying to get a schedule down for work/writing stuff. I’ve written more this week than I have last week, even if it is only a couple hundred words at a time.

And I have done zero work on getting things together for Camp NaNo next month. At least I only need to come up with 30k words. I think I can manage that. I hope. It should be an interesting month, that’s for sure. I need to find some new sound track music to help during my writing. If I listen to anything with lyrics, I’ll pay attention to what the song is about than just pushing forward. On top of that, I want to read again. I haven’t really read anything that didn’t have to do with work for the past two weeks.

Bleh, that does suck.

And in true fashion, considering that I’m having problems writing, I can’t think of anything really interesting to talk about.

So, have a good week and see you Friday.

Midweek Blahs

I missed Monday’s post. But I did have a valid excuse. Work has been crazy. We have someone retiring and there are two of us who have to take over some of the duties she does as well as our own work. While that doesn’t seem bad, we used to be a team of 5 to a team of 3. There is a lot of reading documents, meetings and making sure that we can keep things in budget while making sure programs still can provide services. A state commonwealth public servant. Once upon a time I would have recommended state employment to people but we have seen some heavy cuts and we’re supposed to get more and frankly unless you know someone big, you’ll just be at the bottom of the totem pole and get stepped on.

I don’t think I’ve really written much in the past week because my mind has just been so tired after work, on top of the time change. I’m trying to turn it around. I’ll have to see how well I do in the next two days. At the moment, in the one chat room that will hold sprints for Camp NaNo, all the warm up sprints are too late or mid afternoon so that I’m not home. So there isn’t anyone really to poke me on chat or something and have a small word war.

I was talking to someone though and she gave me a link to make your own chicken nuggets which look really yummy. And since I’m such a nice person I’ll share. Cause really, these look too yummy to keep to myself.

Chicken Nuggets

See you on Friday when I hopefully have a little more energy. We’re having cake. Maybe the sugar will help.

Midweek Hump

Posted in blogging, writing with tags on March 6, 2013 by Nellie

It’s Hump Day and another day down. I have to say that I’ve been bad. Tonight is the first I’ve written for this month period. That’s bad. But things have been getting hectic at work so when I get home, my energy is half shot and trying to think of twists and turns. Bleh. I have felt it, at the back of my head “I should be writing. I need to get that story done.” The mind is more willing than the body. I’m hoping to remedy that a bit. Even with the work schedule that is looming on the horizon.

The final tally for February is 25,214.

The starting tally for March is 768. Hopefully this is just a slow start. <a hrefCamp NaNo is starting up next month and the one thing that has changed. Instead of 50,000 words being the goal, you can put the number that you feel will work for you. So it is very relaxed this year which is nice. So on top of getting back into writing every night, I have to work on what story I'm going to work on.

Maybe sitting at the dining room table will help with writing when I'm taking breaks from making things. I know going out to places like Panera Bread can help too because it gets me out and sitting on my butt. Though one of my favorite places, Atlanta Bread Company, closed. And they didn't announce it or anything. Just locked the doors and cleaned out the place. I found out by reading an article in the paper. They had some really yummy French Onion soup. Ah well.

What are your favorite places to go out when you need to get away from your own set up at home?

Late Night Ramblings

It’s pretty bad when my cat is giving me the “it’s time to go to bed now, mom” look as he lays and waits for me to get off the computer so he can get with using me as a pillow to sleep on. Such is my life.

I’ve been pretty busy right now with work as there have been things happening and due to the nature of how hirings are handled, hoping that it isn’t permanent as there are only two of us to do something that is the work of three/four people.

I want to say that I have something to write about writing but at the moment, my mind is sort of ‘bleh’ at the moment. I’ve progressed on my half-NaNo this month. The past two days I had been too tired to even think straight so no writing had been completed but I managed to write over two thousand tonight and will have about two-three thousand to finish off at twenty-five thousand for the month. Just as long as I don’t get distracted and actually do writing over my lunch.

I would have written today but I had to get a new upright freezer as the one I currently have is on the fritz and the roommate and I are tired of fighting it as this is the second time it decided to do something stupid. And when I mean new freezer, I’m talking new used because that’s all I can afford right now. Either way, it will work and the place I got it from, a local mom and pop operation, gave us a six month warranty.

Annnnd, I think that’s all I’m going to write before it all becomes incoherent and a mishmash of keys.

See you on Friday!

Imagine Something Witty Here

Posted in February NaNo, flash fiction, writing with tags , , on February 22, 2013 by Nellie

I’m glad that we’re slowly heading towards Spring. I know Winter is a necessary evil but when it’s gloomy and dreary, the only thing I want to do is curl up under the covers where it is nice and warm and nap. And when I win the lotto, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to hibernate. That sounds awesome. (And the lotto is such a dream to hit it right now). I can dream, right?

First, have some flash fiction. As of now, you still have two hours to participate in Flash! Friday.

Sandy jerked awake, catching the edge of the chair before she tumbled out of it. She had thought that dinner was kind of big but then…She wasn’t at her aunt’s for dinner. She was in a field. A field full of chairs that sat empty.

“Crap. Crap crap crap.” She didn’t know what was going on. The last thing she remembered was feeling sleepy.

“Okay, get it together. Maybe this was some really weird realistic dream?” She glanced around, standing up. “I really hope so.” She paused before pinching her arm as hard as she could. “Ow.”

“Boo.” The low voice rumbled behind her.

Sandy screamed like the girl she was and spun around, stumbled back and fell on her ass onto the ground, staring at the dapper man as he pulled the top hat down over his eyes.

Of the brief glimpse she had of them, she could have sworn they were bright red.

“Welcome, welcome. Ms. Hale, if you would be so kind as to come with me, you can wait with the others.”

“What others?” Sandy was confused.

The man gave a wide grin as a tail wrapped around one leg. “All in due time, dear lady.”

200 words

There are six days and two hours until my mini-NaNo is over and I have about eight thousand words to get in between now and next Friday. The past two days I was run down and tired and did ZERO writing. I know, I know. That was bad. Even at work, I haven’t been able to write really since I was busy at meetings. I’m hoping to fix that this weekend and next week and get at least to the 25k mark. As of now, I’m just a little bit over the 17k mark. And I’ve written about 500 words in half an hour. I need to keep up that momentum as well as character profiles for all the stories that I have bouncing around.

Fun stuff.

How a great weekend.

(I’ll think about posting a recipe this weekend since I forgot about it Wednesday.)

I think I can, I think I can

Posted in writing with tags , , on February 15, 2013 by Nellie

Wow, my last post actually had a bunch of likes on it. I don’t know if it as for the Anti-Valentine’s Day rhetoric or the bagel recipe. If it’s the recipe, I can do it again next week. Maybe find something that I am trying out and post it. Heh. Either that or it was just a plain fluke. Either way, it was pretty cool to see.

ANYWAY! I think this might be an actual writing post. Woohoo! (Of course, watch me choke on writing something.)

I’ve been taking part in what could be termed as a 1/2 NaNo. There are some of us who have used a chat during NaNo that thought it would be fun to just write 25k during the month of November. It’s casual. No stress and it’s about 800 words a day. That’s not to bad actually when it comes down to it. I figured why not. I’d work on a bunch of short stories that are half finished. It would be a good way to do that. So far, I’ve started some new stories that will require some building to go on that are set in urban fantasy realm and my Jane and the Fae story. Jane is the only old story I have worked on this month.

Yeah, I have a bit of a problem. Every time I say I’m going to work on something old, something new pops into my head and I want to get it down before I forget about it. Or I get an idea off of seeing an image or hearing something. I even made a list to help with that issue. Work on the old stuff and see what could be salvaged for later. Just note some things down on the new stuff and work on them later. SHOULD be simple. Should be the operative word.

I just started another story that had a bunch of characters that have been playing around in my head for a couple months now. I had said I wanted to take a break from Steampunk because I was feeling a little burned out from forcing myself with this last NaNo. Right now I still don’t want to look at that novel right now. Take a break, refresh myself and write something else. Horror, fantasy, sci-fi. Well, these characters are Steampunk.

My mind isn’t right sometimes.

I’ve been also keeping track of how much I’m writing daily and see how much I write by the end of the year.

In January, there were 10 days where I didn’t write anything and 8 days where I wrote under 500 words. The total for that month was 16,384 words written on various short stories and writing challenges from a community I’m in.

So far this month, at the midway mark, there have been 2 days that I haven’t written anything and only 1 day where I wrote under 500 words. My current total is 12,502 and that’s not counting what I wrote tonight. I’m four thousand shy of breaking last month’s writing goal.

Total for the year to date is 28,886.

The goal is joining up in a group and being held accountable I guess. And the first Camp NaNo is coming up in April. I have no clue what I’m going to work on for that yet. Ugh.

Have a good weekend!
