Today, well these last two hours and five minutes, is Valentine’s Day. The day were the price of a dozen roses is jacked up 50 to 75 percent of what they usually cost. Same with the cost of candy. And everyone is all “Do YOU have a valentine?”
No, no I don’t. Not a romantic one. Do I really need one? I’m not bashing on people who have a girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/whatever combination. I’m long past tired of the media and places making such a big deal about being a couple. At this point in my life, I really have no interest in being romantic. I haven’t for a long time. yes, I have my actor crushes and all that. Who doesn’t? I just don’t have a personal relationship that is romantic.
But everyone makes such a big deal out of Valentine’s Day. Because??? You shouldn’t have to expect someone to remember to celebrate a day that was made up by businesses so that they could make money.
Bah. Anyway. I don’t care. Not a big Valentine’s Day fan.
Either way, I made bagels from scratch and it was fairly easy. The breadmachine did the difficult part. So, instead of writing or anything like that, have a recipe!
This recipe makes 12 bagels.
1 cup water
1 1/2 tbsp honey
1 1/2 ts Salt
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 tsp yeast
Set bread machine for the dough cycle. Let the machine knead the dough once, and then rise the dough for only 20 minutes in the machine. Divide the dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and form into a circle by pressing the ends together. Wet one end if necessary. Place on greased baking sheet, cover, and rise 15 to 20 minutes.
Bring water to boil in a pan that is not aluminum. Lower a few bagels at a time into the water and cook for 30 seconds on each side. Remove,drain on towel, sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds and place on greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 425 F oven for 8 minutes or until golden.
And here is the recipe if you don’t have a breadmaker.
1 pkg dry yeast
2 tsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 3/4 cup flour
2 quarts water
Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water. Stir in sugar, salt, and 1 2/4 cups of flour. Beat. Stir in remaining flour. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead for about ten minutes, or until elastic. Place in greased bowl then turn greased side up. Turn over again and let rise in warm place for about 15 minutes, or until double. An indentention should remain if you poke your finger gently into the dough.
Punch down dough; divide into 8 equal parts. Roll each part into a rope 6 inches long. Moisten ends of ropes with water then pinch together to form a circle. Let rise for 20 minutes
Heat oven to 375F.
Heat 2 qts. water to boiling in kettle. Reduce heat Add 4 bagels. Simmer for 7 minutes, turning once. Drain on kitchen towel. Repeat with remaining bagels, simmering four at a time.
Place bagels on baking sheet. Bake in oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until brown.
This might be a bit of a cheat post but…THINKING IS HARD!! 🙂 Just kidding. I don’t have anything really interesting to report other than I haven’t written anything in the past two days and I need to catch up on my own personal goal and I have these set of characters dancing around in my head and I’m trying to figure out how to get them out on paper without them seeming empty.
