The End of NaNoWriMo 2012

Posted in blogging, challenges, NaNoWriMo 2012, WriteMotivation, writing with tags , , on December 4, 2012 by Nellie

Well, it is the end of the month (and a few days) and I have survived yet another NaNo. Barely.

1: Keep up with NaNo and use the blog to keep track, maybe even give a six sentence snippet with each post.

Final word count is 50,226.

I just barely got to that and the last few thousand words, I thought I might have repeated myself a time or two. This year was a little more difficult because the characters were speaking to me a few months ago when I thought of the idea. Yet once I started writing, they went quiet. And mid-month, I sort of started to hate what I was writing. I wasn’t pleased with the flow or how things went so slow that I had to throw in stuff just to make it more interesting to me to write. It’s going to be put away and I’ll just let it simmer. I might bring it out at some point and rewrite parts of it and pull the story out like I wanted to so that I like it again.

2: Work more on expanding the world that I’m basing my story on. (Most people would do this as prep, you know before NaNo. Not me, OH No!).

With the way things were with this past NaNo, I’m taking a bit of a break from writing steampunk. I’ve been writing it as NaNo for the past two years and I think I’m pushing too much on it so I’m going to write Fantasy, Urban Fantasy or horror to give myself a break and then come back a little more fresh to tackle the world building I need.

3: Keep to the blogging 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri).

Eh, this was up and down this month and then I had gone on vacation and didn’t have constant access to the internet since I was visiting my family. I’m going to try to pick it up again now. Never mind that December is just as busy with things as November is.

4: On top of NaNo, keep up with the flash fiction contests all week.

Umm.. I did half the flashes I usually do. I’ll take that small amount of success.

5. Actually pulling out my older NaNos and work on editing them, even if it is a page at a time.

This didn’t happen as much as I would have liked.

So far, my first #WriteMotivation goals…didn’t happen as much as I would have liked them to and that is on me. I read some of the blogs but when it comes to commenting, I never know what to say than “That’s great” or “yeah, me too!” I need to work on that.

One thing with NaNo and the reason why I’m glad that it’s over is I have time to read again. I read a book in two days because I wanted to unwind from NaNo. Until Camp NaNo next year.

NaNoWriMo Day 19 / #WriteMotivation #3

1: Keep up with NaNo and use the blog to keep track, maybe even give a six sentence snippet with each post.

41,477 / 50,000

Sunday I joined some other WriMos and we spent six hours doing some pretty heavy sprints. I had written about 3k previously at a write in and on top of that, wrote about another 7k. I had wanted to be at 40k tonight just so that when I go to hand writing tomorrow, I can take it easy and not kill myself. Trust me, my wrists hurt plenty after last night. But it was a good pain?

2: Work more on expanding the world that I’m basing my story on. (Most people would do this as prep, you know before NaNo. Not me, OH No!).

I need to look at my maps. My story was going slow and I wasn’t really feeling it so I threw in some things and I need to figure out what place they are going to so I can blow it up. Or something. 🙂

3: Keep to the blogging 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri).

Yeah, I said above that I missed some, again. And as I’m going to spend Thanksgiving with my family and will have limited internet use unless my sister lets me use the computer at night when everyone is sleeping. It’s going to be by the ear until I come back next Tuesday.

4: On top of NaNo, keep up with the flash fiction contests all week.

I missed some last week and this coming week will have me missing more. Again, it depends on my access when I’m at my family’s.

5. Actually pulling out my older NaNos and work on editing them, even if it is a page at a time.

Haven’t touched much on this again. Meh. I do want to work on some short stories mainly because it’s not NaNo and I’m starting to feel the burn I usually do come November 30th.

So, nothing really new other than doing some hardcore sprinting to get my NaNo word count up. I have my Livescribe pen packed and I’m ready to write as I have about a 10 hour flight out and about 11-12 hours on the way back. But on the way back is a night flight so I might doze a bit. But everything will be involving handwritten work.

I wish everyone to have a fantastic holiday with their family and friends!

Yes, about that… / WriteMotivation Check In #2

So, because of Veteran’s Day I totally forgot about making a post. Plus I missed one (or two) last week. The only thing that I can say that NaNo truly sucks my gray matter out. It’s bad enough on a normal day but November is especially strong.

1: Keep up with NaNo and use the blog to keep track, maybe even give a six sentence snippet with each post.

26,233 / 50,000

That is my current word count as of this posting. I’m hoping to add much more by the time the 20th comes around because I’ve already been told that there are many things I will be doing with my family next week so my writing is going to dramatically slow down, plus I’ll be doing it via my Livescribe pen than on the computer. I don’t write as fast as I can type.

Snippet:

“Hey, feel free to go back to wherever you were. I’m sure they’ll put you back where you where and we can get done with whatever it is you guys were sent here to do.” Bridgette shrugged, shifting the basket in her hands. She heard Thor inhale to say something but before she could do anything, Loki was right in front of her, grabbing her chin in his fingers.

She gasped, one foot stepping backward but he had her locked in place as his gaze burned down into hers.
“Listen, and listen closely because I’m only going to say this once. You should be grateful and on your knees thanking us that we had come. Because if left to your own devices, you would flounder and be bowled under by the forces that will be coming here and do their own battle. They don’t care about you, they don’t care about anything so fragile and so easily broken as mortals. You have no idea how insignificant to us you are. You are mere specks of life on the beach that are ground under our foot. So do me a little favor, mortal, and don’t speak of things you have zero comprehension of. I will not hesitate to leave you behind, no matter what the Thunder God here thinks that we need you for. You can’t surpass anything that I can do. Do you understand?” His fingers tightened on her chin, digging into her flesh. “Because I’m not going to repeat myself ever again.”

“Loki. Unhand her now.”

“Do you understand?” The frost giant ignored Thor and stared down at Bridgette, green fire burning bright with contempt in the depths of his gaze.

“Crystal.” Bridgette ground the word out.

2: Work more on expanding the world that I’m basing my story on. (Most people would do this as prep, you know before NaNo. Not me, OH No!).

Yeah, brain = mush. Didn’t get much further on that than last time though I finally picked up a Norse Mythology book I’ve been wanting to get for a while.

3: Keep to the blogging 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri).

Yeah, I said above that I missed some.

4: On top of NaNo, keep up with the flash fiction contests all week.

I lost track of time last night so I missed the one when I was writing. I was trying to get ahead and had the tv off and the headphones in.

5. Actually pulling out my older NaNos and work on editing them, even if it is a page at a time.

Haven’t touched my previous one for the past week. Work has been crazy on top of just keeping up with word count.

NaNoWriMo / #WriteMotivation Check In 1

Posted in NaNoWriMo 2012, WriteMotivation with tags , on November 5, 2012 by Nellie

So far, so good. I’m sitting here, about ready for bed and I remembered that I needed to do my check in. So here we go:

1: Keep up with NaNo and use the blog to keep track, maybe even give a six sentence snippet with each post.

Word Count: 10,199/50,000

Snippet:

(Guy) called Bridgette’s name again, tilting his head before racing to the far corner that was resting in the snow and grunting as he lifted it up with a gun. Muscles strained in his arms and neck as he pulled up on the heavy roof of the building.

There was some coughing and Brid came wiggling out from under it, her hand curled into a fist and splinters having scored across her face.

Mrs. Wilks made a sound “Bridgette! Are you okay? What happened? We heard this awful noise inside.”

I do have a name for (Guy) but I forgot it and I need to find my notes on what I actually called him. That or I did a drabble in October. *cough*

2: Work more on expanding the world that I’m basing my story on. (Most people would do this as prep, you know before NaNo. Not me, OH No!).

I have the map printed out but haven’t sat down yet to work on where things will be and what is in the area yet. I will need to do that because my two characters will be moving around.

3: Keep to the blogging 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri).

So far so good I have been doing it.

4: On top of NaNo, keep up with the flash fiction contests all week.

There is usually one on Mondays, Motivational Monday, but the gentleman who hosts it is also taking part in NaNo, plus he was affected by Superstorm Sandy as well so there wasn’t one today. Tomorrow is Tuesday Tales and 5 minute fiction but I might not be home for 5 minute because we’re going up to the barn tomorrow due to possibly getting snow sometime during the week.

5. Actually pulling out my older NaNos and work on editing them, even if it is a page at a time.

Nothing had gotten done on this yet because I couldn’t find the story I was working on previously. It would have upset me if I couldn’t find it because I was already 50 pages in with editing first round. But YAY I found it tonight and will be doing a couple pages before bed.

NaNo Status

Posted in NaNoWriMo 2012 with tags on November 2, 2012 by Nellie

So far, so good. For not really feeling solid on the plot I managed to churn out over 3k in something. Not sure what it is, but it’s something. Maybe things will pick up when I move the two MCs together. Granted, yes I should start with that but this is NaNo right now and I don’t think I want to throw away 3k in words right now to fix the slow beginning. Though I did find a cool site that has scanned copies of old maps. I found an 1859 map for the area that I’m basing my story in. Map Archive.

Word Count: 3,361 / 50,000
Morale: Okay
Snippet:

“You are in my dream. Telling me I’m going to get visitors?” Okay, if this was someone’s idea of a joke, Brigette was going to punch them in the face. It wasn’t very funny.

“They aren’t just ordinary visitors. I will remind you to keep your eyes open. Things aren’t always as they appear.”

“That makes no sense. Why are you telling me nonsense?” Brigette pinched the bridge of her nose. “I really need to stop having coffee before bed.”

My goals for November

Posted in NaNoWriMo 2012, WriteMotivation with tags , on October 31, 2012 by Nellie

Wow, I have been really bad for the past couple of posts. Go me. Way to keep to even a three day posting moment here. I’d like to say that I was really distracted but it was more that I was really forgetful. Hopefully I can start on doing things a little early that maybe it will work then.

Anyway, last week I had the fun of seeing Henry Rollins in one of his spoken word engagements. If you’ve never heard of Henry Rollins, check out his website here. He’s been a rocker, an actor, a rights activist, a traveler. He’s only fifty-one and he still tours around like no one’s business. In his earlier spoken word CDs, he drops a lot of F-bombs. He’s apparently mellowed a bit as he’s aged as he hardly swore at all. It was a fun show and my friends and I were amazed that he talked for two and a half hours without taking a drink of water. That and he held the mic like he was ready to belt out a tune. He talks about a lot of things from politics to how he grew up and experienced to what he is planning on doing in the future. If you have a chance to see him, I would suggest that you do so. He is entertaining. He might use a bit of salty language but then there are few people that don’t these days.

So, it’s two hours away but is looming like a monolith. NaNoWriMo starts up tonight at midnight but considering how I’m feeling sleepy, I don’t think I’ll stay up very long even to write 100 words. They’ll get done, when they get done and we’ll see if this story has staying power. BAH! I’m a pantser so it’s always a ‘will I get it done this year’ moment. I do have to say that if you are having problems getting words down, find a sprint partner or a chat that has word sprints. You would be surprised how fast those 100-200 word sprints add up by the time you are done for the night. That’s how I passed 50k last year. I wouldn’t say finished as there is a LOT if fixing that I need to do.

And what is taking NaNo by the horns than signing up for something else, such as #writemotivation. One of my fellow MLs, Rebekah speaks of #writemotivation and how it has helped her a lot so I’ll give it a go and see how I do with it. I had seemed to have kept up with it at the beginning of the year with writing daily and then I don’t know what happened. I just seemed to have ‘died’. I was very meh about writing and I need to at least do something every day, even if I later throw it out because it is more utter crap than my other utter crap.

I need to do a goal list so:
1: Keep up with NaNo and use the blog to keep track, maybe even give a six sentence snippet with each post.
2: Work more on expanding the world that I’m basing my story on. (Most people would do this as prep, you know before NaNo. Not me, OH No!).
3: Keep to the blogging 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri).
4: On top of NaNo, keep up with the flash fiction contests all week.
5. Actually pulling out my older NaNos and work on editing them, even if it is a page at a time.

So, on top of NaNo going on this month, I’ll be flying out West to visit my family for Thanksgiving so I’ll be taking my Livescribe pen and notebook to get writing done because I’m not sure that I’ll have a lot of computer access except at night. I’m not sure if I’ll be staying at my sister’s or my mom’s yet. Plus the things that we’ll be doing.
Come December, yeah, I’ll be ready for a long nap.

Insert Post Title here

Annnd, I totally forgot that last night was a posting day for this thing. Grr. I could say I had good reason? I was working on a writing challenge as well as trying to mull over my NaNo novel, which I don’t have much of a solid connection between my two MCs. That has to be worked out. I’ll probably be doing some writing drabbles to get more familiar because while they were talking to me this summer during the Camp NaNo, I thought ‘naaah, I’ll save this for regular NaNo’. And now they went back to hide.

The muses like to do this to me a lot. They jump around like crazy cats trying to catch the fishy on a string (as an aside, my cat can get some serious air. He loves the toys with the bells on most of all) and as soon as I pay attention, they go hide. Grah.

If all else fails, I’m going to be using some purple prose to pad my word count. I have to work on some more character profiles and see if that helps perk things up as well. I also need to do some research into early 19th and 20th Century Norway and Sweden since I’ll be using that for my AU Steampunk story.

Thirteen days to go and I haven’t even started on research.

Yeah, this NaNo is going to go so well.
